What happens after you contact Meals Direct

After contacting Meals Direct, confirm the state team, service area, program authorization and next action. Use this guide to keep pending and confirmed answers clear.

After you contact Meals Direct, it helps to know who can answer which question. Ask Meals Direct about service availability and the contact route for your state. Ask the member's program about eligibility and meal authorization. After an inquiry, confirm what has been received and who has the next action. A message to a provider does not itself confirm an authorized benefit or a delivery.

Four questions after an inquiry

Use these questions to learn the steps for your state. They are not a promised intake sequence:

  1. Did I reach the correct team? Our locations page has a page for each state: Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.
  2. What location and program details are needed? Ask how the team will confirm the service area and participation in the member's program.
  3. Is a meal authorization already in place? If not, ask the service coordinator or program who can explain the request process.
  4. Who has the next action? Record what needs to happen, who will do it and how to follow up.

Information gathering versus benefit authorization

These two things are easy to mix up, so it helps to separate them.

Information gathering (what intake does)

Prepare the address or ZIP code, program or plan name and any existing authorization information. Ask which details the team actually needs and which private channel to use. You can also ask which formats, menus and language support are currently available. Options vary by area and program.

Benefit authorization (what the program or plan does)

Whether a member is eligible for home-delivered meals through a program, and whether the service is authorized, is decided by the member's program or health plan. In Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices program, for example, the Department of Human Services says each participant receiving long-term services and supports has a service coordinator and a person-centered service plan. Services are arranged through that plan.

A provider's service-area answer and a program's authorization answer address different questions. Confirm both before treating service as arranged.

Some eligible members may receive authorized meal benefits at no personal cost. Coverage and authorization vary.

Who follows up

Depending on where things stand, the next contact might come from:

  • The Meals Direct team for your state, about the service area, details or scheduling
  • The member's service coordinator or case manager, about the service plan or authorization
  • The member's program or health plan, about eligibility or authorization decisions

Ask the team handling your question what follow-up to expect. Timing depends on the member's state, program and the information available. If you are not sure who has the next step, ask during your first conversation and write the answer down.

Where to ask if you have not heard back

If you have been waiting and are not sure where things stand:

  1. Contact the Meals Direct team for your state through our locations page or Request a call, and ask for the current status.
  2. Check with the member's service coordinator or case manager if authorization is involved.
  3. Have your notes ready: when you reached out, who you spoke with and what they said.

Please keep health details, ID numbers and case information out of social media comments and messages. For anything personal, use the phone, email or Request a call.

Keep pending and confirmed answers separate

Your notes might show that a contact request was sent while the service area is still unconfirmed. They might show that meals are authorized while a provider arrangement is still pending. Both are useful updates, but they mean different things.

Write the date and source beside each answer. If two answers seem to disagree, ask the team responsible for that decision to clarify. Avoid sending the same documents through several channels unless the receiving team asks you to do so. Clear records make it easier to explain where the question stands.

Frequently asked questions

Does contacting Meals Direct mean the member is signed up?

No. Contacting Meals Direct does not enroll anyone or establish eligibility or authorized meals. The member's program or health plan decides. Read what any form submits, and its consent terms, before sending it.

Who decides whether the member is eligible?

The member's program or health plan. Meals Direct gathers information and works within what is authorized.

How long does it take?

It depends on the state, program and information available. Ask the team handling your question what follow-up to expect.

What if the member already has meals authorized?

Tell the team that meals may already be authorized. Ask what evidence is needed and what still needs to be confirmed for service at the member's address.
